1. Be aware of services offering to set up your whole website, including domain purchase.
So I have been hearing a lot of people, especially in Pretoria, being caught by this same old trick. Pay attention to what I am going to say next as it will save you time, money and energy.
The first thing I want to discuss is hiring someone to build you a brand-new website. Yes, obtaining a website is a good thing, but how it is done is more important. When you hire someone to build your website and they offer to buy the domain on your behalf, the first thing I would do is ensure that they register the domain in YOUR name. Why? Because if they’re the owner of the domain, they own all the content on the website. “Okay, so what if they own the content, I am paying them so I still own everything.” The thing is, as soon as you decide that their service is no longer satisfactory and decide to change your service provider you are left with absolutely nothing: no website, no content, no traffic, no return on investment. Always make sure you own the domain.
2. Deciding which CMS (content management system) you want to use.
A CMS is the platform used to build your website. There are several different CMS platforms, these include WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, SilverStripe, etc. and in my opinion, WordPress is the best CMS for corporate websites and small E-commerce sites, seeing that it is extremely user friendly and it comes with all the features necessary to build a beautiful website. Drupal on the other hand is more powerful than WordPress, but more knowledge on web-development is needed to successfully use Drupal to deliver the same standard of aesthetics as WordPress. Joomla is also a very powerful system that is used in big E-commerce sites and websites with rather complex goals in mind.
If you’re uncertain about which platform to use I would recommend consulting with your SEO expert/ web design expert so that they can help you make a decision. If you are building a website without any help I would say your best option would be to go for WordPress.
3. Less is a lot more
When it comes to the layout of your web page and the amount of content displayed for your user then minimalism is your best friend. Keep the design clean with not too much info, you want just enough to keep people interested. They are already on your page meaning that they see potential in using your services, don’t scare them off! Instead of jamming all of your content on the homepage rather give them a few buttons to click through to pages with more information.
4. Enable people to contact you
One of the major reasons why someone is on your homepage is to obtain your contact information to call or email to buy your product, so make it easy for them to find your contact details. The ultimate would be to have the company’s phone number on the header of the page, but having the details in the footer of the page is also acceptable.
5. Try and find a SEO expert with web design knowledge.
When creating your company website why not kill two birds with one stone and get yourself an SEO expert that can also do web design to optimize your page from the first day. Why would this be beneficial? Because from the first day that Google starts collecting data about your site, all the necessary information is already on the page, there will be no data on the page that could potentially earn you a penalty from Google and your site will then already be set up for future optimization meaning that you will save money.
